[edit] Purpose of training

A core requirement for becoming an Onan keyholder is training. The observatory and its equipment are generally on a scale and complexity with which many MAS members have no experience. This training program provides the basic information to keyholders need to open the observatory and operate the basic equipment safely, keeping themselves, visitors and the equipment from harm.

[edit] Structure of the training

As the complexity of observatory operations has increased, it's become difficult to cover all the necessary information in a single, on-site training session. To address this the training has been restructured as a combination of 'self-study' training using the MnAstro.org web site, and the traditional hands-on training performed at the observatory.

This complexity has also created a need to divide training into two separate sessions-- basic and advanced.

When you've completed the basic level of training training, you'll have the fundamental skills needed to open the observatory, help set-up and tear-down for public nights, operate the telescopes and close the observatory for the night. This basic training is the focus of the material that follows.

Advanced training -- CCD operations, for example -- are not required to open and operate the observatory for general or public use. This training is performed on an ad hoc basis, as needs and interests dictate. This training is publicized in the Onan Keyholders forum.

[edit] Let's get started!

If have not already registered as a user on the MAS discussion forums, please visit www.mnastro.org/forums and do so now. You'll need the access to complete training.

As you progress through the self-study component of training, feel free to post your questions in the Onan Training Forum.

Once you've completed this section and have your forum access, continue on to the next lesson by clicking on the Becoming A Keyholder link found in the bottom right-hand corner of the article.
