Membership

Benefits

Along with the obvious benefits of participating in a society of people sharing a common interest, your membership in the Minnesota Astronomical Society provides other substantial, tangible benefits such as:
  • Monthly meetings.  Please refer to the "Meetings" page (www.mnastro.org/meetings) for details.

  • Star parties.  Please refer to the "Star Parties" page (www.mnastro.org/star_parties/) for details.

  • Discounted subscription to Sky & Telescope magazine. In order to take advantage of the discount, do NOT submit a personal subscription to Sky Publishing -- the treasurer of the Society must process the subscription on your behalf.  Simply add the discounted subscription fee listed above to your annual dues when joining the MAS or renewing your membership. For further information, contact the treasurer of the Society or see the insert in any issue of Sky & Telescope.

  • Discounted subscription to Astronomy magazine.  Once a year, the MAS can enter a group subscription to Astronomy magazine at a significant discount from regular rates. The group subscription is usually submitted in September.  Contact the treasurer of the Society for details.

  • Discounted / group purchases of annual publications.  Every year, the MAS purchases a quantity of several annual publications. These may include the Observer's Handbook (published by the Royal Canadian Astronomical Society) and the Ottewell Astronomical Calendar. Copies are typically reserved during November and are available in January. There are frequently a few extra copies available for those who missed the sign-up period.  Contact the Society's Secretary for more information, to reserve copies or to check availability of extra copies.

  • Astronomical League book service.  MAS members may order any book on astronomy through the Astronomical League's Book Service at a 10% discount. For information on the ordering procedure, look in the most recent copy of the League's quarterly publication, the Reflector.

  • Bi-monthly MAS newsletter.  Members receive the Society's bi-monthly,  GEMINI.  It contains information about the organization and its activities as well as articles and columns by MAS members.

  • Quarterly newsletter of the Astronomical League.  Members receive a subscription to the Reflector, the quarterly newsletter of the Astronomical League, a national federation of astronomical societies and clubs.

  • Loaner telescopes.  A number of telescopes are available for members' personal use.  Telescopes are loaned for a period of 30 days.  The loan is continually renewable so long as another member is not waiting for a telescope.  Contact the vice president of the Society for information or to request a telescope.

  • Use of observing facilities.  MAS members can use the various observing facilities the Society maintains, such as the warming houses at the Metcalf and Cherry Grove sites, and the Onan Observatory.  Eligibility requirements vary -- visit the "Star Parties" page at http://www.mnastro.org/star_parties/ for details.

  • E-mail list.  Anyone can subscribe to the MAS e-mail list. In addition to announcements regarding MAS events, list topics occasional notices and reminders of astronomical events (aurora announcements, for example).   To subscribe, please visit http://lists.mnastro.org/mnastro/listinfo/mas and follow the directions found there.  You can also review an archive of messages, and maintain or terminate your subscription at this same location.

  • Observing programs / certificates.  The Astronomical League awards Messier Certificates to those who observe 70 or more Messier objects. Certificates are also available for binocular observers.  Details are available in the Reflector, or contact the Society's secretary.

  • Library.  MAS maintains a library of books, magazines, 35 mm slides, and other reference materials (refer to page at www.mnastro.org/library for a description of the holdings).  Leave a message on the MAS info line (952-467-2426) or send an e-mail to info@mnastro.org for further details.
